"Pitch day" is one of the most searched phrases in the AFWERX world, and also one of the most misunderstood. It is not a demo day for VCs. It is a government source-selection event compressed into minutes, where Air Force and Space Force evaluators decide whether to put a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract behind your technology.
You do not get to a pitch day by showing up. You submit a proposal through the DSIP portal against an open AFWERX solicitation, clear the written review, and are then invited to present. On the day itself you get a short slot — often well under fifteen minutes including questions — in front of a panel that typically pairs a contracting officer with technical and end-user representatives.
The tempo is deliberate. Evaluators may see dozens of companies, and the best awards decisions can land the same day or within days. That speed is the whole point of the AFWERX model, so respect it: an over-built, jargon-heavy pitch dies fast.
Three things decide your outcome. First, military relevance: can you name a real Department of the Air Force problem and, ideally, a real customer who feels it? Second, technical feasibility: is the phase of work you are proposing actually achievable with the money and time on offer? Third, dual-use commercial merit: is there a market beyond the government that de-risks the bet?
Judges reward founders who show, not tell. A short simulation clip — your design flying, thermal loads resolving, a structure surviving vibe — lands harder than a bullet list. Ansys offers startup and evaluation access to its simulation suite, so you can generate that proof before you ever book a booth.

Phase I proves feasibility; Phase II builds it; and the real prize is a customer who wants to keep buying.
